This page collects opportunities that may be useful to economics students. Some are formal jobs or internships; others are summer programs, research positions, fellowships, competitions, public-policy opportunities, or things that simply seem worth your attention.

I do not screen every opportunity in detail. Check eligibility, deadlines, location, compensation, application requirements, and whether it actually fits your goals.

Start early

Do not wait until senior year. Browse early, notice patterns, and start building the skills and evidence these opportunities ask for.

Verify details

Check dates carefully. If a deadline is near, go directly to the organization’s site and verify current application instructions.

FTC
BUREAU OF ECONOMICS
STATISTICIAN
GS-07 / GS-09

Federal Trade Commission — Bureau of Economics Statisticians

Application deadline: October 24, 2026. Apply through USAJOBS.

Shared by Professor Paulo Barelli for students with strong data skills. The FTC is recruiting graduating seniors and master’s students with coursework in economics, statistics, data science, or computer science.

The work: Work alongside PhD economists on economic and statistical analysis for antitrust and consumer protection investigations and litigation, academic research, and reports on how markets function.

  • GS-07: Strong interest in applied microeconomics; proficiency in Stata, R, or Python; enthusiasm for analyzing varied datasets and working with economists on research.
  • GS-09: Strong applied microeconomics, programming, and data-analysis skills; proficiency in tools such as Stata, R, Python, SQL, or C++; experience with regression, model evaluation, machine learning, or natural language processing. Work may involve terabyte-scale datasets.

Eligibility: The FTC recruiting page specifies U.S. citizenship or nationality and graduation before starting. Check each USAJOBS announcement for the required coursework, education, and experience at that grade.

Apply to both grades if seeking GS-09. The FTC strongly recommends also submitting a separate GS-07 application. Applying only to GS-09 does not put you into consideration for GS-07.

Application tips from the FTC

Résumé — two pages or less. Highlight relevant coursework; economics, econometrics, and statistics knowledge; programming; data cleaning and preparation; econometric or statistical analysis; and results presented in graphs, tables, papers, or presentations. The recruiter strongly recommends including hours worked per week for each position and your GPA.

Federal résumé requirements

Cover letter: Explain your interest in economics and the FTC. Give concrete examples of statistics, econometrics, programming, and economic research from coursework, projects, employment, or presentations. Include public-policy interests or experience, especially antitrust or consumer protection, if relevant; prior experience in those topics is not required.

PAST RESEARCH
PAYCHEX DATA
SEPT. 9, 2026

Paychex Data Research Opportunity — September 9

Professor Ronni Pavan is working with Paychex on a new confidential dataset containing county-level measures of firms’ hiring, separations, employment, and compensation across the United States. The initial project will examine the effects of the ACA expansion, but the data potentially open the door to many other research questions as well.

Interested students were invited to meet representatives from Paychex on Wednesday, September 9:

  • Around 12:30 p.m. — Harkness 210
  • 2:00 p.m. — Dewey 2110E

This was an unusual opportunity for students interested in empirical economics, independent research, or potentially developing a future thesis idea.

Think of this as an example of the kinds of research opportunities that can appear during the semester: working with a remarkable real-world dataset, seeing what questions emerge, and learning what serious empirical research looks like.

The data were to be stored securely on BlueHive, with access potentially available to interested students willing to sign the necessary confidentiality agreements.
